Bare-Bellied Hedgehog Paraechinus nudiventris (Horsefield, 1851) Thriving in a Greenery Ecosystem: Reviving Harmony at Diamond Jubilee Park, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, India
Abstract :
The Bare-Bellied Hedgehog (Paraechinus nudiventris), an endemic species to India, has been observed thriving in the greenery ecosystem of Diamond Jubilee Park, Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. This study documents its presence in the park’s restored habitat, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts and sustainable greening initiatives. The park, spanning 110 acres, has undergone extensive afforestation with native flora, creating a suitable environment for various fauna, including the P. nudiventris. Field observations confirm that the hedgehog utilizes the dense vegetation for shelter and foraging, reinforcing the role of urban green spaces in biodiversity conservation. Although listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, the species faces threats from habitat destruction and human activities. The study recommends further surveys to assess its distribution, population dynamics, and ecological preferences, emphasizing the need for continued conservation initiatives.
