Screening of Osmotolerant microorganisms in the dry fishes of Kerala

Abstract :

Water Quality Index (WQI) is important to identify the overall water quality status and for its potable nature. WQI indicates the water quality in terms of index number which offers a useful representation of overall quality of water for public usage.WQI of a few important man made reservoirs of River Cauvery in Tiruchirappalli District, Tamilnadu, was carried out over a period of two years (August 2011 to July 2013). Attempts have been made to elucidate the WQI criteria for the appropriateness of drinking water sources of some vital stations of River Cauvery (from Mayanur to Grand Anicut). There are several ways to assess the quality of water so as to prescribe fit for drinking, irrigation and industrial uses. The study initiates awareness and offers solution to pollution control programmes, eventually focuses on water quality management. This is an attempt to determine WQI on the basis of various physico-chemical parameters such as pH, EC Bicarbonate, Nitrate, Chloride, Sulphate, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, DO, BOD, COD and TDS.
