A Preliminary study on the air borne mycoflora of Koyambedu Bus Terminus, Chennai, South India.

Abstract :

The Mangroves are fragile ecosystems that provide with numerous ecosystem services, especially through their rich biodiversity of microbes, plants and animals. Humans benefit a lot from these ecosysytems. But, human interventions cause serious damages to the mangrove habitats including pollutions, especially microbial pollution with pathogenic bacteria. Present study was, therefore, carried out to assess the pathogenic bacterial diversity and population density in four mangrove habitats (Burmanallah, Sippighat, Dhannigadi and Wandoor) of the Andaman island, India. Among the four mangrove habitats, Sippighat had higher microbial pollution as reflected by the higher pathogenic bacterial density followed by Dhannigadi, Burmanallah and Wandoor mangroves. Escherichia, Pseudomonas and Vibrio were found to be more dominant than the other genera (Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus) in all the four mangrove habitats.

This study is very important as it would kindle interest in the future workers to ascertain the prevailing coastal mangrove sanitation so as to keep the coastal environment clean for the benefit of the mangrove dwelling communities as well as the mangrove dependent humans.
